What does HVAC mean?
HVAC is in common use in the heating and cooling industry. It stands for "heating, ventilation and air conditioning," three functions often combined into one system in today's modern homes and buildings.*

What is SEER and EER?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is most commonly used to measure the efficiency of a central air conditioning. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit. An EER is short for Energy Efficiency Ratio and doesn’t take into consideration the time of year, but rather the system’s energy efficiency at the peak operating use. Both ratings should be considered in choosing prodcuts. Residential air conditioners sold in the U.S. must have at least a 13 SEER.
Should outdoor units by covered?
In short, no. Heat pumps and outdoor units operate year-round and should never be covered. They are built to withstand an outdoor environment and should not be covered. In fact, you should allow for room for air circulation in and out of the unit, roughly about 18 inches from the unit. Without this room for air circulation, the unit could overheat.
Should a thermostat be set to auto or on?
The ideal setting would be 'auto' by default. This way, the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. There are advantages to using the 'on' setting, however. With the 'on' setting, air is constantly filtered through the unit’s air filter, and the constantly circulating air results in an even temperature throughout the house.
What is the difference between a split system and a package unit?
A split system uses indoor and outdoor components to provide a complete home comfort system. A package unit or self-contained unit requires no external coils, air handlers, or heating units. A ductless mini-split system is an alternative to traditional heating and cooling like central air. Ductless HVAC works similarly to central heating and cooling, except that it doesn’t require ductwork.
